Walt Disney World has a new president - and he's openly gay.
George Kalogridis began his new position as head of the Orlando, Florida, resort last Friday (1 February).
He's now the top boss of approximately 66,000 employees at a resort where he began working back in 1971 as a busboy at one of the theme park's resorts. He was just 17 and was hired before the then brand-new theme park had even opened.
Kalogridis, now 59, returns to his Disney roots in Orlando after serving as president of Disneyland Report in Anaheim, California, since 2009. He also had a three-year stint as chief operating officer of Disneyland Resort Paris.
The Disney World Resort is now much more than the original theme park. It currently covers 40-square-miles and has added three additional theme parks: Epcot, Disney's Hollywood Studios and Disney's Animal Kingdom as well as two water parks, 24,000 hotel rooms, 3,000 time-share suites, and a 120-acre retail complex.
'This is a very, very big place, and having been able to see it from Day 1 and to see it now — truly, you have to respect just how incredible this project is," Kalogridis tells the Sentinal.
The Orlando Sentinel reports that Kalogridis and his partner of 12 years, Andy Hardy, are planning to build a home in Disney World's new luxury subdivision called Golden Oak.
