A recently launched website by a Melbourne-based hockey player has a far reaching agenda to combat homophobia in the sport.
Hockey Against Hate is “a call to arms to change and make the hockey community on and off the ice not only less homophobic, but less racist and less sexist,” says Melbourne based founder and director Sasky Stewart.
Stewart is a commissioner of the Australian Ice Hockey League and is also involved with the Australian Women’s Ice Hockey League.
She was inspired to create Hockey Against Hate after reading anti-gay marriage comments on Twitter and what she called the hate from people for something unknown to them.
Stewart said Hockey Against Hate sets out to provide resources and initiatives for people to get behind, to increase education and awareness of homophobia, racism and sexism in sports, and help players, coaches, administrators and fans create environments more welcoming and accepting for orientations, ethnic backgrounds and genders.
Using Twitter, Stewart recruited further members in the US who identify as LGBTI and are from racial minorities.
“Hockey Against Hate is for anyone who believes that sports can be a vehicle for change, and that the sporting experience is one that should not be denied to anyone regardless of orientation, ethnic origin or gender,” Stewart said.
