Australia’s Finance Minister has announced the pregnancy of her female partner, reigniting debates on the legalisation of gay marriage in Australia.

Penny Wong released a statement saying that she and her partner, Sophie Allouache, are expecting their first child. However AFP reports that Prime Minister Julia Gillard has reaffirmed her stance against legalising gay marriage.

Gillard told the news agency: “Penny Wong is a colleague of mine, she’s also a very long-term friend, so I’m very pleased for Penny and her partner Sophie as they look forward to a new baby and the next phase of their lives.”

She continues: “Clearly there are strong views about same-sex marriage in the community. I’ve made my views clear.”

Wong is the only openly-gay member of Gillard’s cabinet. Last week, PinkPaper.com reported that the Australian census is now including same-sex partners and those married outside of Australia even though gay marriages are still illegal in the country.

Wong, who does not wish for her child to become a political statement, told The Sydney Morning Herald: “You have a child because you want a family and you want to have the opportunity of raising a child together.

"You don't have a child to make a political statement. I don't want to engage in the policy debate about these issues in the context of something that is so deeply personal and so lovely. Children need to be loved, nurtured and respected, and our child will be."
