Lady Gaga ends her partnership with Target over the company's support of anti-gay rights politicians such as Tom Emmer, John Kline, and Erik Paulsen.
In February, Target was reported to be selling a deluxe version, with bonus content, of Lady Gaga’s new album Born This Way when it’s released on May 23.
The Advocate reported a close source to Gaga said, “She and Target didn’t see eye to eye on Target’s policy of political donations and how they affect the LGBT community.”
In July, Target’s Political Action Committee made donations towards the MN Forward, a PAC in support of Minnesota State Representative Tom Emmer’s campaign for governor. Emmer’s a conservative who is outspokenly against gay rights. It has also been reported that 3/4 of Target’s political spending in 2010 was donated to anti-gay rights politicians including MN Reps. John Kline and Erik Paulsen.
Gaga told Billboard.com, “That discussion was one of the most intense conversations I've ever had in a business meeting. Part of my deal with Target is that they have to start affiliating themselves with LGBT charity groups and begin to reform and make amends for the mistakes they've made in the past...our relationship is hinged upon their reform in the company to support the gay community and to redeem the mistakes they've made supporting those groups.”
Since the details of the ended partnership have not been made public yet, the Target special edition of Gaga’s new album may not be canceled.
