Recent research from La Trobe University has found that 75 per cent of same-sex attracted young people have experienced some form of homophobic abuse and 80 percent of those incidents occur in schools.
Stand Out is a guide to challenging homophobia in schools. It is the first of its kind in Australia to bring together real stories and advice from students who are already making change in their schools, in the hope of inspiring others.
La Trobe University research shows that 61 per cent of same sex attracted or gender questioning young people in Australia experience verbal homophobic abuse and 18 per cent experience physical homophobic abuse. Since the majority of this abuse is happening in schools the resource will act as a guide to tackle homophobia.
Stand Out has been created by a team of young people from Minus18 and Safe Schools Coalition Victoria determined make a change. As well as a 32 page guide booklet, Stand Out is a movement of young people online and in social media, with videos, posters, and stickers to inspire and support others experiencing homophobia and wanting to challenge it.

Safe Schools Coalition Victoria is a group of schools and individuals dedicated to making schools a safer place for same sex attracted and gender questioning students. Minus18 is Victoria’s largest network for same sex attracted and genderqueer (SSAGQ) high school students. The team of 40 high school aged volunteers run under-age dance parties, workshops and social events for other SSAGQ young people all around Victoria. Minus18 reach out to more than 70,000 SSAGQ youth each year both online and through events and workshops - making it the largest group for SSAGQ youth in Australia. www.minus18.org.au/standout
